Hydrotherapy is a form of physiotherapy treatment that uses heated water to assist and resist body movements. Hydrotherapy (or Aquatic physiotherapy) utilises the resistance of water to strengthen or the buoyancy of water to mobilise painful joints and muscles to facilitate rehabilitation after injury or relieve the pain of chronic conditions.

Prime Physiotherapy uses the indoor heated pool at the E.G. Whitlam centre and is an integral part of our rehabilitation program. Used in conjunction with other rehabilitation techniques, a personalised program of exercises is developed to help improve muscle power, range of movement, balance, coordination, endurance and confidence in movement.

Due to pain and mobility restrictions, a heated pool can be the only place where independent movement can take place. The physiotherapist joins the patient in the pool to guide and assist with movement and to perform mobilisation techniques in a pain free environment.

Hydrotherapy can be useful in the treatment of:

  • Orthopaedic and spinal conditions including fractures, dislocations, acute back pain, disc injuries, chronic back pain, multiple injury/trauma, post operative back surgery and post operative orthopaedic surgery such as hip and knee replacements or reconstruction, muscle and tendon injuries and sporting injuries
  • Arthritic conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, fibrositis and osteoarthritis
  • Weight loss fitness training

Hydrotherapy with Prime Physiotherapy is performed by one of our physiotherapists in the water and can be in a group setting or ‘one on one’ treatment sessions, depending on the level of care required. For non mobile, wheelchair bound patients, we recommend a carer to be present to assist with showering and dressing and transferring into and out of the pool.

On your first consultation you will be asked to complete some paperwork and questionnaires in order for the physiotherapist to assess your injuries and design a program tailored to your needs. Please come to the pool in your cozzie, ready to go at the time of your consultation as all our classes start on time and late comers will receive a shorter session.
